Il tanto atteso primo album live dopo 13 anni Live at the Fillmore (1997) Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers è in uscita il 25 novembre su etichetta Warner Records. Prima di iniziare la serie di 20 spettacoli al Fillmore, Tom Petty spiegò i suoi piani in un'intervista al San Francisco Chronicle:
Siamo musicisti e vogliamo suonare. Abbiamo fatto così tanti album negli ultimi 5 anni, penso che la cosa migliore da fare per noi sia semplicemente andare e suonare e questo ci porterà nel nostro nuovo posto, ovunque esso sia.
Gli show al Fillmore si sono rivelati alcuni dei più felici, onesti, ispiranti e prolifici momenti della carriera della band, creando un collegamento unico tra il gruppo e i suoi fan. Questo album contiene più cover che originali, rendendo omaggio agli artisti e alle canzoni che hanno formato l'amore di Petty per la musica durante la sua crescita, prima che diventasse egli stesso un leggendario performer e cantautore. Gli highlights includono Knockin On Heaven's Door di Bob Dylan, Crazy Mama di J.J. Cale, Time is On My Side dei Rolling Stones e brani dei Kinks, Everly Brothers, Bill Withers, The Byrds, Chuck Berry e Booker T. & the M.G.'s. La raccolta contiene performance speciali con il front man dei Byrds Roger McGuinn e la leggenda blues John Lee Hooker. Altri stand out includono versioni estese delle tracce originali Mary Jane's Last Dance e It's Good To Be King.
Suonare al Fillmore nel 1997 per un mese è stata una delle mie esperienze preferite come musicista in tutta la mia vita. La band faceva scintille e cambiava set ogni notte. La stanza e il pubblico erano spirituali..e..abbiamo suonato con ospiti pazzeschi. Ricorderò sempre quelle notti con gioia e ispirazione. - Mike Campbell
Il Fillmore era un laboratorio per la band. Le affascinanti esibizioni sold-out erano un successo, gli Heartbreakers erano stati perfino soprannominati Fillmore House Band. Allo show finale, Petty commentò appena salì sul palco:
Ci sentiamo tutti come se questo fosse il punto più alto del nostro tempo come gruppo..sarà difficile farci scendere da questo palco stanotte.
L'album sarà disponibile nella versione 3LP che simula uno dei concerti e un cofanetto comprensivo di 58 brani e 14 divertenti tracce parlate che sottolineano la connessione di Petty con il suo gruppo e il suo pubblico dal palco. La raccolta è stata meticolosamente curata dai produttori Ryan Ulyate e Mike Campbell e i produttori esecutivi Benmont Tench, Adria Petty, Annakim Petty e Dana Petty.
